Devonshire

A new front garden for a low-slung modern home in Devonshire, designed to give the house a real sense of arrival. A gravel drive and parking area now handle cars. Along the street, a long Corten steel planter holds a row of trident maples over ornamental grasses, with a Corten steel block carrying the house number. Water already crossed the front of the house, so we turned it into a feature: a drainage way lined with river rock, bridged by a wood deck that serves as the entry. Corten planters on either side hold Japanese maples, farfugium, sedge, and horsetail. Grasses and fine textures are set in clean, ordered blocks, which gives the garden a quiet, almost Japanese restraint and the house a whole new face to the street.
